    BOB BATES ASSESSMENT NOV 2015

Assessment for Mike Oldfield - "Muse"

Very good performance, Bob. After a slightly shaky start (erratic rhythm guitar timing causing a slight swing feel to creep in) you played the whole melody with authority and perfect phrasing, and have largely overcome the unintentional staccato like quality you were previously having with melody pieces like this.

If I were to suggest what might be improved with this piece it would be the introduction of vibrato on the long notes, and variation in dynamic range (loud/soft). You might also make more of the incidental slurring (sliding) between notes.

Thanks Craig. Interesting comment about the shaky start which I recognise. The backing starts several bars before the melody and I found it difficult to reproduce Mike Oldfield's picking pattern so I think I tended to come in with the melody a fraction of a bar early. This meant I wavered a bit as I tried to get the lead to sync with the backing. I think I can play it correctly if I use the GP backing track or the original record. As a background task I might see if I can accurately reproduce his picking pattern to see it that helps.

I guess that shows another aspect of trying to play with other musicians (even if it was actually just me in this case), i.e. synchronising a melody to a backing.

Thanks again for some more tips to work on.

    Bob
