    BOB BATES ASSESSMENT OCT 2015

Post by Craig Hardie on Tue Oct 13, 2015 1:26 am

Assessment of "Beatles - Eight days A Week"

Bob, you've made some real strides here. An almost flawless performance, with perfectly executed chord changes and good timing throughout. Were you playing along with the Guitar Pro track or a metronome? (I can't hear one). The only inconsistency I noticed was during the second repeat of the final chorus, where you changed to the G chord a beat late in both bars (beat 2 instead of beat 1)... Count along with the recording and see if you can identify this by ear.

I would like you to now revisit the intro/outro, using the 4-string chords indicated in the chord library at the top rather than the full chords you played on the recording. For this part, play the phrasing exactly as written in the slashes (as it sounds). You might also want to have a go at the 12-string part.

    Well done!

    Hi Craig,

Thanks. I was playing along to the original record while listening through headphones, hence you couldn't hear it.

I had the feeling you might have been. That's a really good way to train your timing. The next stage is to see if you can reproduce the same performance without recourse to the reference guitar track. Use a metronome or backing track for rhythm (I've just put one in the dropbox). If you can do this reasonably well, then you should next attempt to perform the whole song without any rhythm reference at all! If you can master this, you will have demonstrated the ability to internalise all the musical information and relay it back to the listener. Smile
